On staff paper (provided or free downloadable/printable staff paper HERE) complete the assigned composition assignment meeting the following criteria:
4/4 Time Signature
Four full measures - barlines between measures
Start and End on 'C'
End last measure with a double-barline
Show math under measures
Worth 5 points homework assignment
Due at beginning of class on Tuesday
Extra Credit Opportunity: For every 2 additional correct/full measures composed, students will receive 1pt EC. Up to 5 points of EC may be earned.
ALL 5th/6th students need to bring this half-sheets of staff paper to class T/Th this week, as we will be writing short songs in class. If you don't have those half-sheets, you may struggle. Bring your required materials to make making music much much merrier! :)
REMEMBER that the past FIVE WEEKS worth of Practice Times are due THIS Monday, December 17, and are for 25 points! Students should have a grand total of 375 minutes to earn all 25 points.
Points earned will be based on the number of points practiced (using a comparitive cross-multiply-and-divide equation N/375 = ?/25 where we solve for ? by: N * 25 / 375 = ?, then round to the nearest whole number). For example, if Suzy Q practiced 250 minutes, her score is calculated as follows:
250 * 25 = 6250
6250 / 375 = 16.66
Suzy's score will be 17/25

Well, it’s that time of year again. . .
Time for the 5TH AND 6TH BANDS AND CHOIRS WINTER CONCERT!!!!! This note is just a friendly reminder that this year’s Winter Concert is Wednesday, December 12, with a start time of 7:00pm, and that all 5th and 6th grade students are required to attend as part of both their Band and Chorus/Music grades. This year’s Winter Concert should be a lot of fun, and I hope you are looking forward to it as much as your students and I are. The following information is important, with some new and some review, including a reminder on attire and call time information.
Call times are important to get the groups’ voices and instruments warmed up, thinking about the concert, and focused. It is also a time for last-minute reminders, announcements, etc. It is important that ALL students are on-time, in the room, and ready to go at these times to help the evening run smooth and keep everyone organized and focused. Call times to warm up, with students meeting in the band/chorus room upstairs, will be as follows:
6:10 – 6th Grade Band
6:20 – 5th Grade Band
6:30 – 6th Grade Chorus
6:40 – 5th Grade Chorus
6:55 – All in seats
7:00 – Concert Begins!
And, as was sent home in the August letter with the concert date on it, the concert attire is as follows: 1. A solid Red, Black, or White shirt (NO stripes, patterns, etc, please). 2. Good pants (no rips, holes, tears, please) and 3. Good shoes. If acquiring any of these has been or will be a problem, please see Ms. Simmons immediately.

CONGRATULATIONS to the following 5th and 6th grade students selected to perform with the 2012 Illinois Music Educators Association All-District Festival Elementary Chorus on November 3, 2012, at Western Illinois University!
More information about transportation, dress code, and schedules will be out to each of these students VERY soon! Congratulations again!
Just a reminder to all 5th and 6th grade parents/students wanting to be a part of the 2012 IMEA All-District Elementary Chorus on Saturday, November 3, that Permission Forms are due THIS THURSDAY (9/27)
Selection takes place around October 1, once all nominations are in, and I will inform students and parents of who has been chosen from Cuba to attend just as soon as I know. Students will need nice clothes for the concert on November 3. This is a great experience, especially for those talented young singers wanting to audition for choirs and other music opportunities later on.
There is a NEW percussion rotation system that will be posted/explained today, as well as attached below.
If a student is to play snare on a day, he/she brings only his/her snare drum, sticks, and book.
If a student is set to play bells, bring only bell kit, mallets, and book.
For Auxiliary assignment (bass drum, triangle, etc.) only bring book and (not required) perhaps a set of sticks and/or mallets.
Rotation will be as follows, may change with notice:
Snare - Sammy, Andrew
Bells - Breanna
Auxiliary - Cheyann
Snare - Cheyann
Bells - Sammy, Andrew

All percussionists will still need to learn each assigned piece on ALL percussion parts, this just ensures a well-rounded rotation. A similar rotation will be put in place for 5th grade, once 5th band starts meeting.
TODAY from 4:00 - 6:00pm, a Music Shoppe rep will be with Mr. S in the GS cafeteria! Come sign up for band, get started on the instrument rental/purchase process, order all your necessary materials, and get set for a great experience in BAND! Hope to see lots of students here!
